Upgrading from GTX 680 to RX 580 gives black screen

Recommended Posts

I've had a nvidea GTX 680 4GB working well in my rig and decided to upgrade to a Sapphire RX 580 8GB.

When I tried it, it gave a black screen when reaching the Apple logo.

Is there a way to patch it to get it to work, or do I need to re-install the system?

thanks!

Hi, thanks! I've got a Gigabyte Z170-HD3P (Skylake) mobo, with Intel i5-6600k.

It's been working great so far for working at home, but wanted hopefully smoother video in Adobe CC, thanks again for the help!

Disabling csm did let me boot with the RX 580 installed (the nvidea card needed csm enabled).

After that, using my working system, I still could not boot past the Apple logo, and it went black at that point.

Full disclosure, I just found this site, and I've been using Niresh's Catalina installer until now.

Then I added a test SSD and re-installed with the RX 580 and it booted into OS X and I could use my new card!

Unfortunately I was unable to update to 10.5.3 as I had easily done previously with the nvidea card.

I tried both software update and the download from Apple for 10.5.3, but it still wouldn't boot past the Apple logo.

My next step is to try Olarila 10.5.4 installer and follow the concise guide.

Any other tips for me? Thanks so much!

I'm excited to try!! I've been telling my friends about this site, as it looks like a high end workstation could be working well with these customizations offered here. Now that I'm working on my hack instead of just playing, I want more upgrades and looks like the help we need is all here. Awesome!!

I did have  the Sapphire running with a fresh install of 10.15.
I’m hoping that your install method will work and also be up to date. I’m really looking forward to the better graphics!

I will try that soon and report back.

Install of Olarila 10.15.5 was a success! Thanks so much for the updated image. I'll send another donation your way.

Some of the changes since .3 included control for the new Mac Pro monitor, and I'm wondering how .4/.5 is working with those changes using our graphics and monitors.

When first booting into .5, the monitor looked very saturated and bright, and when I found the HDR option in Display prefs, I found that the HDR gave the monitor a flat look with less colour and saturation. After another reboot, the monitor looked like it did with my 680 card on .3, but after trying out Sleep, the monitor went back to being bright and type on the screen looked pixelated and not 4k sharp. It seemed like there were 3 different modes that I saw with the only control being the HDR option.

I'm using the  Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX-580 8G connected by Display Port to my LG 32UD59-B 4K monitor.

I reinstalled everything a second time, this time on my nvme drive, and reloaded all the software for work (Adobe CC and MS Office). I noticed that with the new HDR option, that my LG monitor was changed into HDR mode. The options for HDR display features because available and it defaulted to HDR vivid. The colours were weird and after changing to HDR standard, now it looks normal again. I didn't know this monitor supports HDR mode which is cool. My friend bought a similar Benq monitor, and it does not have HDR from what I read in the specs. Something to keep in mind when buying!

When I've looked at the Sapphire RX 580, I have not yet seen the fans running. Is this normal for these cards?

Also I haven't seen an error yet with Messages like I did previously where it failed to send my message due to the recipient being "not registered with Messages". Yay!!

Makes sense, thanks! I've had a few random restarts, mostly just sitting there. I followed the guide using 10.15.5, and installed Clover but I did not update Clover so it is still at 5116. It makes sense to update Clover, but what is the best way? There are many options using the Clover installer, thanks!

I'm still getting random OS crashes while working, a couple times a day at least. Not while doing anything in particular, seems random. One of the crashes I've had a couple times gives a white noise from the speaker and the cursor gets blurry forcing me to hit the restart button. With my previous build (10.15.3 and the Nvidea GTX 680) I did not have these crashes, and they only started with the new Sapphire 580. Any ideas? thanks!

It has not crashed since Wednesday, so should I still update the video support? I checked with Videoproc, please see screenie.

OK, it just crashed again! Update Lilu and Whatevergreen kexts, then change the ig-platform-id using Clover Configurator, and make sure IntelHD is on in bios, does that sound like it?

I checked my bios (Gigabyte Z170-HD3P) and I don't see intelhd option. Under Chipset I have VT-d Disabled and Internal Graphics as Auto. Should I change the Internal Graphics to enabled? thanks!
