Realtek USB Wi-Fi is coming to macOS Tahoe — and we're opening the project to the community!

We're introducing Tahoe Wi-Fi USB, an open-source project focused on bringing Realtek USB wireless adapters to macOS Tahoe on Intel-based systems.

The project includes a native kernel extension (kext) and a macOS menu bar application for managing USB Wi-Fi connections.

Our goal is to develop a reliable, community-driven solution while expanding hardware compatibility through real-world testing, contributions, and collaboration.

What's Included?

  • Realtek USB Wi-Fi driver — Multiple chipset families integrated into a single kernel extension.

  • Native menu bar application — Discover available networks, connect, disconnect, and monitor connection status.

  • 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz support — Depending on the adapter chipset and implemented capabilities.

  • WPA2-Personal support — Wireless authentication and CCMP encryption.

  • Signal monitoring — RSSI readings and connection information.

  • Clover and OpenCore support — Kext loading through either bootloader.

  • USB diagnostics — Tools for troubleshooting connection problems and collecting technical logs.

  • Open-source development — Full source code, build scripts, documentation, and testing tools available on GitHub.

The driver uses an Ethernet-style enX interface, with a macOS-adapted wireless stack handling supported station-mode operations.

Hardware Tested So Far

The project maintainer has reported testing with:

TP-Link Archer T9UH

TP-Link TL-WN822N

These are our initial reference adapters. Their complete hardware-revision coverage and test results are not yet documented, so compatibility should not be assumed for every revision sold under the same model name.

The source currently includes multiple Realtek chipset backends and an extensive USB adapter catalog. However, having an adapter listed in the database does not necessarily mean it has been physically tested or confirmed working.

We need your help to test more adapters!

Download and Source Code

GitHub Repository:

Latest Available Pre-release:

https://github.com/danielnmaldonado/TahoeRealtekWiFi/releases

The available release packages include the compiled kernel extension, the menu bar application, and SHA-256 checksums.

The source repository may contain newer development changes than the latest published pre-release.

Installation

The kernel extension is designed to be loaded through Clover or OpenCore.

For Clover, place the kext in:

EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/

For OpenCore, place the kext in:

EFI/OC/Kexts/

Then configure the corresponding entry under Kernel -> Add in OpenCore's config.plist.

The menu bar application is installed separately in macOS.

Please read the repository's installation documentation and back up your existing EFI configuration before making changes.

Development Status

This is an experimental development release, not a fully validated production driver.

Hardware support varies by chipset, device revision, firmware, and configuration. Some features remain incomplete or unavailable, including WPA3, Wi-Fi 6/AX, access point mode, and station operation for certain chipsets.

Successful compilation does not guarantee successful wireless operation on physical hardware.

Help Us Expand Compatibility

This project is being shared to encourage collaboration.

We're looking for users and developers willing to test additional Realtek USB adapters, report compatibility results, investigate bugs, improve reliability, and contribute support for more devices.

When reporting results, please include the exact adapter model, hardware revision, USB VID, chipset if known, macOS version, and the observed connection behavior. Diagnostic logs are particularly helpful; please remove personal information before sharing them.

Contributions, bug reports, hardware test results, and pull requests are welcome.

The more hardware we test, the better this project can become.

Reporting Issues

If you find a problem, please report it with proper logs.

Before posting, run the included log collector: HERE
