Codec-Info is a lightweight macOS utility designed to detect and display the real analog HDA audio codec used by your system. It is especially useful for Hackintosh users, audio troubleshooting, AppleHDA patching, AppleALC layout testing, VoodooHDA diagnostics and HDAUniversal validation.

The app reads macOS audio information directly from IOKit and IORegistry, matches detected codec IDs against a bundled audio-codecs.ids database, and shows the result in a clean, compact interface. Codec-Info focuses only on analog HDA audio codecs, intentionally ignoring HDMI, DisplayPort and GPU digital audio devices to avoid misleading results.

With Codec-Info, users can quickly check whether AppleHDA, AppleALC, VoodooHDA or HDAUniversal is loaded, identify the detected analog codec, view the codec ID, vendor, layout ID, revision, HDA controller information and detailed detection evidence. When no supported audio stack exposes the codec directly, the app can still show the visible HDA controller fallback and includes an optional raw HDA probe to attempt low-level codec detection.

Codec-Info is built for speed, stability and privacy. It does not collect, transmit, upload or store personal data. It does not install drivers, kexts, daemons, helpers or background services. All detection is performed locally on the Mac.

Key Features

  • Detects analog HDA codecs on macOS
  • Supports AppleHDA, AppleALC, VoodooHDA and HDAUniversal workflows
  • Uses a local audio-codecs.ids database for codec name resolution
  • Ignores HDMI, DisplayPort and GPU digital audio devices
  • Shows codec ID, codec name, vendor, layout ID, revision and controller details
  • Displays loaded audio stack status
  • Provides IORegistry and IOKit-based detection evidence
  • Includes optional raw HDA probe when the codec is not exposed by macOS
  • Compact, fast and lightweight interface
  • No telemetry, no network scanning and no background service
  • Compatible with macOS Catalina and newer

Codec-Info is a practical tool for anyone working with macOS audio, Hackintosh audio configuration, AppleALC layout IDs, codec verification, Realtek ALC audio troubleshooting, Conexant audio detection, Cirrus Logic HDA codecs, IDT/SigmaTel codecs, VIA codecs and other analog HDA devices.

Whether you are configuring AppleALC, testing VoodooHDA, validating HDAUniversal or checking why macOS does not expose your codec, Codec-Info provides a simple and reliable way to identify what is really visible to the system.
