Thanks MaLd0n - got it working with your EFI folder in the end. I lost onboard audio, but it was worth it to get USB 3.0!!

Ok so I managed to get back to the start point by removing the SSD and mounting it as external in another mac and returning to the CLOVER folder that I had before. Could you please explain how to do this? Do I copy DSDT.aml from your CLOVER/ACPI/patched/ to my CLOVER/ACPI/patched? This seemed like the way to go so I tried it. It seems like it fixed onboard audio but USB 3 still not working.

Do you mean always? I am confused. I was just about to take my hackintosh apart to remove the SSD to mount in an external enclosure to try and fix whatever happened yesterday and I decided to try booting one more time... and it just worked!!! No idea why it would not boot yesterday and today it would... but I can confirm your USB fix worked... for a moment. Not sure how to even boot at this point. USB installer is not recognised in clover. The only way forward i can see is reinstall via recovery. Is there another way?

Thanks for the effort but unfortunately that did not go well at all. Maybe I did something wrong? All I did was take the Clover folder you gave me and replaced the Clover folder on my system by mounting EFI with clover configurator. After rebooting I just get a stuck machine that doesn't boot and just shows code. the last few lines are about Intelmausiethernetkext. How do I go forward, or back from here? thanks
