How to write a raw image to USB in OS X

Postby pernacabeluda » 15 Sep 2013, 15:07

IMPORTANT: do NOT expand the zip file with OS X default Archive Utility, use other app like The Unarchiver

Open a terminal and do the following

Code: Select all
diskutil list
...
/dev/disk
2
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: FDisk_partition_scheme *16.0 GB disk2
1: DOS_FAT_32
SANDISK 16.0 GB disk2s1
...

Find your USB stick in the output

Code: Select all
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
Unmount of all volumes on disk2 was successful
sudo dd if=[drag and drop the raw file in terminal] of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m
sudo dd if=/Volumes/Dados/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.8.5\ Install\ USB.raw of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m
5371+1 records in
5371+1 records out
5632020480 bytes transferred in 1454.529910 secs (3872055 bytes/sec)

To check progress press Ctrl + T

Finally, before you pull it out

Code: Select all
diskutil eject /dev/disk2

Umm, how about:

Change .raw extension to .dmg

Mount image with Disk Utility -> Restore to Flash Drive.

It won't restore EFI partition and boot sectors (drive won't be bootable on hackintosh).

Am I only one who is having problems to make bootable usb? I write ''% diskutil list'' in terminal and it comes up as no such job.
Is there a fix for that? what am i doing wrong?

Thanks in advance
